Princes Hill House
Princess Hill Townhouse transforms a former Victorian-era stables site in Melbourne’s Princes Hill into a refined multigenerational home. Accessed via a collaged laneway, the two-storey dwelling connects through landscaped courtyards to the original heritage house, creating a private yet cohesive family enclave.
The design centres on efficient, flexible living within a compact footprint, accommodating the evolving needs of its occupants while maintaining independence and privacy. Spatial connections from north to south and high-level glazing amplify light and volume, giving a sense of expansiveness beyond the small site. Dual courtyards establish zones of retreat and connection, allowing seamless transitions between living, working and entertaining.
Materially, the home draws from its urban context; a masonry spine with timber and steel detailing reflects local heritage while engaging the laneway through a porous timber-batten façade. Calm interiors of natural timber, stone and tonal finishes provide warmth and serenity, encouraging personal expression through art and furnishings.
Delivered through close collaboration between architect, engineers and builders, the project balances precision and sensitivity within tight physical constraints. Every design decision prioritised longevity, function and aesthetic coherence, producing a modest yet enduring home that exemplifies quality, sustainability and connection; between generations, spaces, and community.
