Garton Road
Located in inner North Melbourne, Garton Road House reinterprets a classic Victorian dwelling for a young family, blending heritage character with modern liveability. MGA’s design philosophy centred on preserving the home’s historical essence while reconfiguring it for contemporary life. Original architectural details: façade, lacework, archways, and verandah, were carefully restored, ensuring continuity with the surrounding Yarra heritage streetscape.
The project strategically relocated communal spaces to the rear, creating open, light-filled living and dining zones that flow seamlessly into a landscaped alfresco courtyard. This spatial reorganisation fosters connection, flexibility, and family interaction while maintaining privacy through a distinct bedroom wing at the front. A bold interior palette contrasts with the crisp Victorian envelope, merging tradition and modernity with understated confidence.
Collaboration between architect, builder, and client was integral, ensuring cost-efficient outcomes and design integrity. Early builder involvement mitigated latent heritage risks, while material selections balanced practicality and aesthetic ambition. The result is a refined, functional, and enduring family home that honours its architectural past while embracing the present; where restored detail, natural light, and adaptable living converge to create a harmonious, timeless environment that enhances daily life and celebrates Melbourne’s residential heritage.
